n Police were yesterday given an extra 48 hours to continue questioning an Algerian extremist who is suspected of being the mastermind behind recent terrorist bombings in France. Abdelkader Benouis, alias Abou Fares, had been under surveillance by Special Branch and MI5 for some time.

The French authorities are preparing to ask for the extradition of Mr Benouis, who is understood to have had an asylum application rejected already and is appealing.
