Lives Remembered: Ean Wood
Thursday 13 January 2011
Thank you for Tony Sloman's obituary of my old friend and erstwhile flatmate, Ean Wood (10 January), writes Euan Pearson. I knew Ean (pictured right) as a fellow film director at the National Coal Board Film Unit and we shared a rather dingy flat together off Ladbroke Grove in the mid-Sixties. What was missing from the obit, I felt, was a reference to Ean's wonderful sense of humour – he was a walking compendium on The Goons – and his natural warmth.
Although I didn't see much of him after he moved back to the Isle of Man (the last time was in Peel in 2005), I have fond memories of our rare reunions at The Ship in Wardour Street with a couple of his jazz and film friends. Our roars of laughter seemed to bemuse the young, earnest media types grabbing a quick sandwich in their claustrophobic schedules. We were obviously old film-makers – what could there possibly be to laugh about?
