‘Allo ‘Allo and Porridge actor Sam Kelly dies aged 70
Kelly’s agent said he leaves behind ‘a host of friends who were his chosen family’
Sam Kelly, the British actor best known for his role as Hans Geering in ‘Allo ‘Allo, has died at the age of 70.
Mr Kelly’s agent Lynda Ronan said the actor died “peacefully” after “a long illness, bravely fought”.
She said: “He does not leave any family but a host of friends who were his chosen family.”
The Manchester-born star played the Nazi captain Hans Geering in ‘Allo Allo for the programme’s first four series from 1982 to 1987, and before that was known for his portrayal of prisoner Bunny Warren in Porridge.
Mr Kelly also appeared in Barbara, On The Up, and Grown Ups, and recently starred as the Wizard of Oz in the West End show Wicked.
Tributes have been pouring in from friends and former colleagues of the actor, praising his sense of humour and warm character.
Stephen Fry, who starred alongside Mr Kelly in the 1993 prisoner of war comedy Stalag Luft, tweeted: “Very saddened to hear about Sam Kelly’s death. He played a splendid Hitler.”
Colin Baker, who played the sixth Doctor Who, tweeted: “Cannot believe that lovely Sam Kelly has died. We are at drama school together – lovely, funny, talented chap. So sad.”
Robert Lindsay, the My Family star who is currently performing in the West End Show Dirty Rotten Scoundrels dedicated the show the Mr Kelly on Saturday.
