Appeals: The Cumbria Deaf Association

The Cumbria Deaf Association, which was founded in 1893, helps local deaf people and those with impaired hearing. In Cumbria there are about 350 profoundly deaf people and 40,000 with hearing impairment. The association has four centres in the county which act as social clubs and provide vital services. Over the years it has trained and provided interpreters for the deaf community; developed sign-language and lip-reading classes; employed a youth development officer; and provided free technical equipment - with assistance from the social services - for those with hearing difficulties. The association is appealing for pounds 250,000 to develop its work further: they need two minibuses to help people visit the centres and a residential centre for people with special needs.
