Charles Manson: Notorious murderer is still single as his marriage license expires

Charles Manson remains single as his license to marry 27-year-old fan Afton Elaine Burton is going to run out.

The murderer and cult leader, 80, was due to wed Burton - who also goes by the name Star - in a visiting room at California State Prison in Corcoran.

Manson's license to wed expires on Thursday, and as the prison doesn't stage weddings on weekdays, he will remain single. The couple had 90 days to marry and it is unclear why the wedding didn't go ahead as planned.

Burton started communicating with Manson when she was 17 years old, after seeing some of his writing about the environment. She left her home in Illinois in 2007 and moved to Corcoran to be near Manson.

"I'm completely with him, and he's completely with me. It's what I was born for, you know. I don't know what else to say," she told CNN.

She runs several pro-Manson websites and believes he is innocent. It's believed that she wants to marry him so that she can access files that only available to family.

Her family have not cut her off as a result of the relationship, even though they do not support it. "We have not, we are not going to and we never will, no matter what she does in her life, disown our daughter, her father Phil Burton told the Mail Online. "I love my kids more than life itself. I love my daughter, my wife loves my daughter and I know she still loves us."

Manson has been married twice before - first to waitress Rosalie Willis and then to former prostitute Candy Stevens. He had a harem of lovers in the Sixties as part of the infamous "Manson Family", who committed murders.

Manson is in prison for mass murder. Among his victims was actress Sharon Tate, who was pregnant when he killed her in 1969.

He will next be eligible to apply for parole in 2027.
