Eli Wallach remembered: Broadway theatres to dim lights in memory of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly actor
Venues across the city will celebrate the life of the late method actor
Broadway theatres will dim their lights tonight (27 June) in memory of Eli Wallach, who died on 24 June at the age of 98 from natural causes.
The Broadway League said that lights will be darkened at 7.45pm Eastern Time (12.45am GMT) for one minute.
“Eli Wallach was one of the great talents of our time whose prolific acting career spanned more than six decades,” said Charlotte St Martin, executive director of the Broadway League.
“His notable presence on the stage and on screen was both memorable and moving, always. Through the expertise of his craft, he was a storyteller in the most specific yet subtle ways. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and numerous fans, and he will be missed.”
Wallach performed in a series of Broadway productions, including his award-winning role in Tennessee Williams’s The Rose Tattoo, as well as parts in Camino Real , Saturday Sunday Monday and Mister Roberts. He also appeared alongside his wife, Anne Jackson, in 15 Broadway plays.
His best known film credits include The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Baby Doll, The Magnificent Seven and The Misfits.
“The best way to honour him is to put on one of his movies," his son, Peter Wallach, said. "Put on Baby Doll or Magnificent Seven. Those live forever."
In 2010, he received an Honorary Academy Award for his contribution to the film industry.
