George Clooney engaged: Actor’s mum confirms ‘happy news’, as Amal Alamuddin’s chambers break ranks to release statement
George Clooney’s engagement to British lawyer Amal Alamuddin might have been a deeply “personal” and “private” matter, according to his publicist Stan Rosenfield, who has thus far declined to comment.
But even the world’s best spokesperson can’t stifle the squeals of delight from an overly excited mother-in-law to be.
Enter, Mrs Nina Clooney, who just couldn’t hold back any longer.
“You can say I'm extremely happy, Amal's a lovely girl,” she told The Mail Online, when asked what she thought about her son’s engagement. “I like her very much.”
But that was nothing compared to Alamuddin’s chambers boss, who broke chambers rank to release an official statement about his employee’s “happy news”.
“The barristers and staff of Doughty Street Chambers offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms Amal Alamuddin, a member of Chambers, and Mr George Clooney on their engagement to be married,” the firm said.
Joint Head of Chambers, Geoffrey Robertson QC, added: “Amal Alamuddin is a brilliant and passionate defender of human rights who has put in the enormously hard work necessary to improving them. She is respected and admired by all her colleagues.”
“Amal has been utterly wonderful since she arrived in Chambers,” Chief Executive, Robin Jackson, continued. “She brings a bright light to everything she is involved in, and I am so delighted at her happy news.”
So. Good work keeping that one under wraps.
