George Clooney settles Presidency rumours: ‘Who would ever want to live like that?’

The actor explains why he won't be throwing his hat in the ring

George Clooney will not be running for President anytime soon.

The actor has been at the centre of numerous rumours he could run and suggestions he should for the last two decades.

A successful bid for presidency combined with his wife Amal's distinguished career as a high profile human rights lawyer would make the Clooney’s the ultimate power couple, but the actor says the experiences of his friends means he won’t be following in the footsteps of Kanye West anytime soon.

When asked at a press conference in Beverly Hills if he could ever envisage himself as the next head of state, an incredulous Clooney replied: “Who would ever want to live like that?”

“I’m friends with a lot of those guys and I just think it’s hell,” he explained. “I commend people who go into public service because it’s such a horrible way to get elected, it’s such a horrible time while you’re in office, it’s more polarized now than arguably since the Civil War in many ways, and I think people will argue over things that they believed in six years ago or eight years ago because it’s not their guy saying it.

“So, no, I wouldn’t want to be in politics. I have no interest in it… I have every interest in being involved from the outside and trying to get things done that are important to me.”

He should bear in mind the advice President Obama issued to West after the rapper announced his plans to run in 2020 if he changes his mind.

“First of all, you’ve got to spend some time dealing with some strange characters who behave like they’re on a reality TV show,” Mr Obama told the Democratic National Committee fundraiser last week.

He also advised West over his choice of album titles: “Saying you have a 'Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy'… is something a lot of people have lost their congressional seats over.”
