Joan Rivers out of intensive care and into to private hospital room following days in medically induced coma

The comedienne’s daughter thanks the public again for their “continued support” throughout her mother's ordeal

Joan Rivers is no longer in “intensive care” and has been moved to a private room in hospital where she is “being kept comfortable”, her daughter Melissa Rivers has confirmed.

The comedienne, 81, had been on a life support machine for the past week, after suffering from a near-fatal cardiac and respiratory arrest during a routine operation on her vocal chords on Thursday (28 August).

She stopped breathing during the operation and was put in a medically-induced coma at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

“My mother has been moved out of intensive care and into a private room,” said a new statement from Rivers’ daughter, Melissa. “Thank you for your continued support.”

She had previously thanked the public for “the continued outpouring of kindness”.

“On behalf of my mother and our family, we are extremely grateful for all the love and support we have received,” she said in a statement.

“At this time, she does remain on life support.

“I know my mother would be overwhelmed by the continued outpouring of kindness and I want to thank everyone for keeping us in their prayers.”

If she is woken up from the coma, medical experts have indicated that the rehabilitation process could be long and arduous, and potentially span years.

Numerous celebrities have shown their support for Rivers over the past week, including Lena Dunham and Kelly Osbourne.
