Johnny Depp has appeared in a lot of films over the years.

One that he may be least proud of emerged this weekend and appeared to show him involved in a tense, ugly interaction with his now estranged wife, Amber Heard.

The footage was filmed, apparently by Heard, in the couple’s kitchen and she can be heard apologising to Depp and asking him what is wrong. He appears to make his way unsteadily around the room, a bottle of red wine in his hand. The audio of the recording carries the sound of glasses smashing. Cupboard doors slam. Depp's voice is loud, arguably aggressive.

“I just woke up and you were still asleep. We were not even fighting this morning. All I did was say sorry,” she says. In the reportedly edited video Depp responds: “You wanna see crazy. I'll show you ... crazy.”

Heard, 30, filed for divorce from the Pirates of the Caribbean star on May 23. The Texas-born actress accused Depp, 53, of abusing her physically and emotionally during their 15-month marriage and was granted a temporary restraining order by a Los Angeles judge.

The restraining order was extended for a further two months in June. The case is due to go before the courts again on August 17. Some have speculated as to the timing of the release of the video footage.

The video was published by the celebrity news site TMZ and was said to have been filmed in May. The website quoted sources close to Depp claiming that the video was heavily edited and that other parts of the footage showed the actress smiling and even egging on Depp.

Neither of the stars has yet to publicly comment on the footage, though TMZ’s report included a headline that suggested Heard had said she had not released the footage.

Heard has alleged in court filings that Depp abused her throughout their relationship, which started after they met on the set of the 2011 film The Rum Diary.

Through his lawyer, Depp has denied Heard’s allegation of abuse. He claimed Heard applied for a restraining order in response to the negative media coverage she received and in order to “secure a premature financial resolution”.
