Christmas can be a time fraught with tension and anxiety, particularly for parents who have only recently split and must reconnect for one day because of the child they share.

The experience is one known to many families across the UK, where 42 per cent of marriages end in divorce.

But as Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy demonstrate, spending the day together as a modern family can be an amicable affair if it isn’t taken too seriously.

The actress joked about her own reunion with an ‘Ex-Mas’ post showing her and the Muse frontman together on Instagram, writing: “From our #ModernFamily to your #WhateverKindaFamilyIsYourKindaFamily we send you much love and blessings.”

Hudson and Bellamy confirmed their engagement had ended in 2014 and vowed to remain “close friends and committed co-parents”. They have a four-year-old son together.
