Kim Kardashian-West was 'baffled' by nude selfie row

The photo triggered a number of supportive and critical opinions back in March

Kim Kardashian-West says she was “baffled” at the controversy that erupted when she posted a nude selfie earlier this year.

In March, the social-media aficionado shared an old picture of herself naked, with two censor bars in place. The photo cued a mass debate which lasted for several days as the divided internet community aired its opinions. Emily Ratajkowski and Amber Rose shared posts supporting Kardashian-West’s right to post whatever she wants while Kardashian-West took matters into her own hands by answering criticism from Bette Midler, Chloe Grace Moretz and Piers Morgan and penning an essay on self-empowerment to mark International Women’s Day.

Reflecting on those few days of headlines, discussion and think-pieces, the 35-year-old told the Recode podcast she didn’t understand the “outrage” some people responded with.

“I truly was baffled that people still cared,” she said. “They have seen me naked like 500 times and the censor bar literally was probably more covering than a bikini. I could not grasp why people were still outraged.”

Despite her past attempts to “break the internet”. Kardashian-West also maintained she didn’t post the photo to get a reaction but did so just because she liked it.

“I just think it looks good,” she said. “I’m really not trying to cause a reaction […] If I like the photo and I’m into it I’ll post it.”

She also suggested that for those who were opposed to the photo, they don’t have to look at it.

“My personality has never been ‘I’m such a feminist and follow me and be naked’. I’ve never been that. If you are conservative and you are comfortable more power to you. I respect you, you don’t have to look at what I do. I’ll post what I’m comfortable with, some days I’m more confident, sometimes I’m not.”

The businesswoman won a Webby award last month for her internet achievements and in her five-word acceptance speech showed there would be no slowing down of naked selfies anytime soon by telling the crowd: “Nude selfies ‘till I die”.
