LETTER : Colossus first
From Mr Jeffrey Goldberg
Sir: ENIC was not the first electronic valve computer, as you reported in your otherwise excellent article on the Kasparov/Deep Blue tournament (13 February). It was preceded by Colossus, which was used at Bletchley Park to break the Lorenz cipher of the German High Command as early as 1943.
Yours faithfully,
Jeffrey Goldberg
