Liza Minnelli has checked into a rehabilitation centre as she continues her struggle against substance abuse, her spokesperson has confirmed.

Scott Gorenstein, Minnelli’s publicist, said she is “currently making excellent progress at an undisclosed facility”.

“Liza Minnelli has valiantly battled substance abuse over the years and whenever she has needed to seek treatment she has done so,” he said.

The Oscar, Grammy and Emmy-winning actress last entered a rehabilitation centre in 2004.

Her mother, Judy Garland, died of a drug overdose in 1969. She battled addiction for most of her life.

She famously spoke of the “disease” of addiction during a televised interview in 2006.
