In case you ever wondered which way a young Bilbo Baggins would vote in the General Election, Martin Freeman has just been revealed as Labour’s first famous campaign trail backer of 2015.

The Hobbit and Sherlock star appears in an emotive political broadcast on YouTube, during which he outlines the “choice” between Labour and the Tories voters face when they go to the polls on 7 May.

“Now we are in the run-up to a General Election and over that time you're going to hear loads of claims from people on the Left, on the Right, all over the place,” he says to camera.

“It's going to drive you mad. It'll probably drive me mad but don't switch off yet.”

He goes on to claim that a vote for the Tories will take the country on a “rollercoaster of cuts”, while the Labour party will ensure an economy that “works for all of us”, rather than the “privileged few”.

All of this he manages without once mentioning Labour leader Ed Miliband's name.

Freeman’s Labour political broadcast is set to air on TV for the first time on Tuesday.
