Michael Schumacher’s health is “not good”, his former boss at Ferrari Luca di Montezemolo has reportedly said.

The former Ferrari chairman told reporters on Thursday: “I have news and, unfortunately, it’s not good.

“Life is strange. He was a fantastic driver and only had one accident with Ferrari in 1999." He did not give any further details on his condition, according to Reuters.

Schumacher continues to be treated at his home in Switzerland following a skiing accident where he hit his head on a rock in 2013.

The former world champion was in a coma for 159 days before being moved back to Switzerland in September 2014.

In December, the 47-year-old’s management criticised the German news outlet Bunte’s claims that Schumacher had begun taking his first steps since the accident.

“Such speculation is irresponsible,” his manager said at the time, “because given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important for Michael. Unfortunately they [Bunte] also give false hope to many involved people.”

Schumacher's management declined to comment when contacted by the Independent.
