Miley Cyrus suffered from depression after being bullied for having acne as a teenager: ‘I locked myself in my room and my dad had to break my door down’

“It was a lot to do with... I had really bad skin and I felt really bullied because of that," the star told Elle magazine

It might seem unlikely, given that Miley Cyrus’ teenage years were spent looking glossy and flaw-free as the unbearably wholesome character Hannah Montana, the eponymous lead of a famed children’s TV show.

But the troubled pop star has claimed that her self-consciousness as a youngster, stemming from bullying because she suffered from acne, led to her struggling through a bout of depression that was so bad, she had to be rescued by her father.

“I went through a time where I was really depressed,” she told Elle magazine. “Like, I locked myself in my room and my dad [Billy Ray Cyrus] had to break my door down.

“It was a lot to do with... I had really bad skin and I felt really bullied because of that. But I never was depressed because of the way someone else made me feel. I just was depressed.”

Now, however, she says it’s the thought of helping young fans, who may be going through similar mental health problems, that motivates her to continue performing and creating light-hearted pop music, whatever criticism is hurled in her general direction.

“They know that I’ve struggled with depression and that helped them get over theirs.

“That gives me a big purpose – a reason to wake up in the morning that’s bigger than to put on my feathers and my little outfits.”

Because everyone needs a reason to don feathers from time-to-time.

During the conversation with the fashion publication, those remotely bothered about Cyrus’ romantic history would be fascinated to know that she found parting ways with Disney post-Hannah Montana, to become the controversial, leotard-sporting public figure she is today far harder than splitting up with her fiancé, The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.

“When I went through a really intense break-up – you know, I was engaged – the thing that gave me the most anxiety was not knowing what to do with myself when Disney wasn’t there to carry me anymore or if I didn’t have him.

“And now I’m free of both of those things and I’m fine.

“I lay in bed at night by myself and I’m totally OK and that’s so much stronger than the person three years ago, who would have thought they would have died if they didn’t have a boyfriend.”

Cyrus was last seen crying her eyes out as she sung a Fleetwood Mac tribute to her dead dog Floyd live on stage.
