It seems that the Twitter blue tick seal of approval doesn’t mean as much as it used to, after Morrissey confirmed that he does not have an account on the social media site.

Fans of the singer rejoiced earlier this week when the verified Twitter account @itsmorrissey posted its first tweet since joining in 2009.

In a statement sent to a Morrissey fan site True To You, the singer wrote: “I would like to stress that I do not have either a Twitter or a Facebook account.

“I gather that a Twitter account has been opened in my name - as 'It's Morrissey' - but it is NOT Morrissey.

“I do not know who has opened this recent Twitter account, but please be aware that it is bogus. That's, of course, if you should remotely care.”

He signed off in a characteristically witty way with the word: “Untwitterably yours, MORRISSEY, Salt Lake City, 15 May 2014.”

The first tweet sent from the account was posted on the 14 May, saying: "Hello. Testing, 1, 2, 3. Planet Earth, are you there? One can only hope..."

Several more tweets were posted since then and the account gained around 250,000 followers.

The @itsmorrissey account was only following one other account: Harvest Records - the record company which the musician has recently signed with.

The account has now been taken down from Twitter.
