Myleene Klass is facing a rather bizarre outcome to her heated debate with Ed Miliband about “mansion tax”, after a petition was launched calling for her to be dropped as the face of Littlewoods – followed by a petition against the petition.

The original appeal calls for the former Hear’Say singer to be axed as the face of the retailer on account of her “deeply insensitive and ignorant comments” during ITV’s The Agenda on Monday.

Having amassed over 4,000 signatures, it claims that she does not represent Littlewoods’ customers, who “are among the [hardest] hit by Britain's current economic hardships”.

But it was soon met by a counter-petition calling for the original campaign to be banned. That one has just over 150 supporters and states: “Calling for a single mother to be sacked because of her political opinions is as absurd as it is ugly.”

The somewhat meta state of affairs was sparked by Klass attacking Miliband during the current affairs show, as she criticised the Labour leader’s pledge to impose heavy taxes on homes worth more than £2million.

She claimed that those hit hardest by the austerity measures would be elderly home owners and Londoners.

“For me, it’s so disturbing – the name in its own right: ‘mansion tax’,” she said.

The exchange sparked further debate. At PM’s Questions David Cameron claimed that Miliband had been “pasted by a pop star”, while Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has challenged Klass’ comments, saying she is “wrong”.

The online petitions come after social media users set up a fake JustGiving page to “help Myleene Klass pay her mansion tax”.

And a Twitter row erupted after a prospective parliamentary candidate for Labour was misinterpreted as saying she wanted Klass deported.

Paula Sherriff in fact tweeted: “If multi millionaire Myleene Klass doesn't like mansion tax perhaps she should emigrate with Sol Campbell and Griff Rhys Jones! Toodle pip!”
