Adele's American fans think she is "posh".

Although the 'Someone Like You' hitmaker - who hails from Tottenham, north London - thinks she is "common as muck", people in the US often ask her if she knows British monarch Queen Elizabeth.

She said: "American people think I am posh even though I am really not. They think I have a very British accent, as in, 'Do you know the queen?'

"I just laugh at them. In England I am thought of as common as muck."

The 23-year-old singer accepts the success of her latest album '21' has rocketed her to worldwide fame, but she has devised a trick to stop fans approaching her when she is out with her mother.

In an interview with The Sun newspaper, Adele revealed: "I am pretty oblivious to everything. I'm not very in touch with the fame side of things, it doesn't interest me at all.

"My mum even calls me 'Jenny' when we're out in public because if she starts shouting 'Adele' in a big department store people are going to look round and it gets awkward."

Adele's celebrity status has not brought her many famous friends, but she believes if she was younger she would date 17-year-old singing sensation Justin Bieber.

She said: "I am a Bieber needer! I met him and he was very sweet. If I was 14 or 15 I think I would be well on it. I'd get on it.

"My 10-year-old cousin fancies him and I don't really want to fancy the same person she does. It's probably illegal for me to fancy him anyway! But he's taking over the world. I am quite fascinated to know what it feels like to be Justin Bieber."
