Demi Lovato has angered her Russian fans after two of her male back-up dancers shared a kiss with one of them using a photograph of Vladimir Putin to cover his genitals.
The kiss took place at a New York gay parade concert on Sunday as the American singer performed her new single "Really Don't Care".
The audience welcomed the kiss but her Russian fans weren't impressed by the stunt and took to social media to vent their anger using the hashtags #staystrongputin and #demirespectrussia.
Some of her fans, who like to call themselves 'Lovatics', claimed they were disappointed by her behaviour and suggested she should stay out of Russian politics and "stop offending" the President.
The singer later defended the kiss, tweeting: "I never called anybody a piece of s**t... But I did have Putin struttin' in a rainbow thong. Get your facts straight b****sss"
She also posted a series of photographs taken during her performance with the caption: "Yesterday was incredible. So happy. I love you NYCPrice!!"
the most stupid thing a singer can do is getting involved in politics but then where was she a smart one? #StayStrongPutin— see girl (@seegirrl) June 30, 2014
President Putin has taken a tough stance against the LGBT community in recent years, introducing what critics describe as an "anti-gay" law which bans the "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" in June last year.
The document states that "propaganda" of gay relationships includes, "spreading information aimed at forming non- traditional sexual behaviour" and "making a false statement about the socially equal nature of traditional and non-traditional relationships".
