Duke of Rutland keeps his marriage split in-house

The Duke and Duchess of Rutland might be separating, but they are maintaining a most civil arrangement.

The couple split after the Duchess discovered the Duke's infidelity. Despite the separation, they both continue to share the family home, Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, with their five children and their new partners.

Of course their unusual marriage is not the first for the modern landed gentry. Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath, has, since he married in 1969, had relationships with scores of other women or "wifelets", a number of whom he has installed at his family's seat, Longleat.

But the Rutlands' set-up is far more equitable. And while not everyone has a castle to divide up, for the aristocratic classes, it could provide a model for modern marriage.
