Elizabeth Taylor dedicated to Aids fight
Wednesday 23 March 2011
Elizabeth Taylor devoted the latter part of her life to the fight against Aids.
The Hollywood star founded the American Foundation for Aids Research (Amfar) following the death of her close friend Rock Hudson in 1985.
When Hudson announced in the early 1980s that he was HIV positive, the news stunned the world.
He was the first major public figure to fall victim to the disease.
Taylor immediately set up the charity and worked tirelessly for the cause.
"I am on a crusade against Aids and I'll battle forever even after a cure is found," she said.
"Making people aware of the disease, and comforting and embracing sufferers, has been my greatest role off screen."
Amfar has become one of the world's leading non-profit organisations for Aids research, prevention, treatment and education.
It has invested nearly 250 million dollars (£138 million) since 1985 and funded grants to more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.
Taylor also roped in her Hollywood friends to help.
Every year Amfar hosts a star-studded bash at the Cannes Film Festival. In recent years Taylor had been too ill to attend.
