George Clooney engaged to Amal Alamuddin: Actor to marry British human rights lawyer who has represented Julian Assange

Actor George Clooney is engaged to a British human rights lawyer who has represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and former Ukraine prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, according to reports.

Amal Alamuddin, 36, a London-based barrister, was born in Beirut and is fluent in French and Arabic. She has also worked as an adviser to former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, now joint special envoy of the UN and the Arab League on Syria, and a United Nations inquiry into the use of drones.

Clooney, 52, was married for four years to actress Talia Balsam until they broke up 1993 when he famously pledged never to marry again.

And last year he told Esquire magazine: “I haven't had aspirations in that way, ever. I was married in 1989. I wasn't very good at it. I was quoted as saying I'll never get married again pretty much right after I got divorced and then I've never talked about it since.”

However E! news, citing two sources, reported that Ms Alamuddin was seen with a “massive” ring on her finger on Thursday at the Nobu restaurant in Malibu. At one point, actor Edward Norton approached the table and the couple told him they were engaged.

People magazine also quoted a source “with knowledge of the situation” as saying: “George and Amal are trying to keep things very low-key but they also aren't really trying to hide this, it doesn't seem.

“I think it's like they want the people they love to know that this is real, that they plan on being together forever.”

Clooney’s representative Stan Rosenfield declined to comment on the reports.
