She may have missed out on Olympic gold at the London 2012 Games yesterday but it was not all doom and gloom for Team GB’s Holly Bleasdale. The pole vaulter announced her boyfriend proposed to her – and she said ‘yes’.
Bleasdale, the British record holder, declared herself disappointed with her performance after she finished sixth in the final of yesterday's event in the Olympic Stadium. She was close to tears after failing to clear the bar with her final attempt.
Afterwards, however, she said she was trying to look on the bright side and she later found something of a silver lining. The 20-year-old posted on the micro-blogging site Twitter: "6th in the Olympics and bradshaaaw proposes to me :) epic day!!!"
Her boyfriend Paul Bradshaw wrote on Twitter: "I have just proposed to Holly Bleasdale and she said yes!!!!! Best day ever!"
Earlier she said: “I am trying to look at the positives and to finish in the top eight in my first Olympic final is pretty good, but I am just heartbroken with how it went today.
“I am only 20 and I feel like I could have performed well this year.”
The eventual winning jump of 4.75m was below her personal best of 4.87m but Bleasdale could only manage 4.45m, failing three times with the bar at 4.55m.
She said: “The conditions weren’t great, it was a really bad headwind.
“I’m really disappointed with how I did. I felt like I could have jumped around 4.70m but I struggled to cope with the conditions.”
