Today, Saturday 11 October, is National Coming Out Day – the internationally recognised day of awareness and celebration of people coming out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer.

Started in 1988, this year marks the 26 anniversary of the day. To mark the occasion the gay rights charity, Stonewall, has launched a new coming out guide for young people called Coming Out: Some of the Questions You May Have. The guide covers issues such as religion, having children, getting married and bullying at school. Coming out can be a daunting and confusing time for young people” said Wayne Dhesi, Stonewall’s Youth Coordinator, said.

Below we chart ten well-known figures from the worlds of sport, music and film to come out this year, who have had an impact.

On Sunday 9 November the Independent on Sunday will publish its annual list of the 101 most influential lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Britain, the Rainbow List.
