Paul Gascoigne credits Peter Beardsley for his recovery

Paul Gascoigne has said he owes former teammate Peter Beardsley for helping him fight back from alcoholism and depression.

Beardsley has been keeping his fridge stocked and has invited the former England hero to training sessions at Newcastle United's youth academy.

Gascoigne said being involved in the routine of daily training had given him a new lease of life.

He was speaking at Wembley, where the pair were supporting Newcastle and Gateshead's joint bid to be host cities if England stages the 2018 World Cup.

He told The Journal, in Newcastle: "I'm really well. I'm training at the academy with the kids. Peter comes and picks me up. It's nice getting involved and getting training again.

"I'm just enjoying playing football and enjoying every game. I'm keeping myself busy and Peter has been fantastic.

"He has made sure I am OK and makes sure I have got bread and milk in the fridge. Hopefully, I'll progress doing my coaching badges."

Beardsley said Gazza deserved all the credit for his recovery.

Having the football hero, who played at Newcastle, Spurs, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough and in China, at the club had delighted the academy trainees, he said.
