Russell Brand to appear in feature-length documentary about his 'spiritual and biographical journey'

The comedian and political activist will be presented as a 'troubled visionary'

Russell Brand is to appear in a new feature-length documentary charting his colourful personal and professional life – with the aptly chosen but highly unoriginal working title Brand.

The comedian-cum-political activist has been followed by award-winning filmmaker Ondi Timoner over the past five years to make the film. The resulting programme is expected to hit TV screens early next year.

Audiences will follow Brand along his “spiritual and biographical journey”, culminating in his realisation that he “embraced the superficial and doped up times in which we live, only to find it was an empty proposition”.

Described as a “troubled visionary”, Brand will be seen in far-flung locations and with high-profile figures, including ex-wife Katy Perry, Mike Tyson and Noel Gallagher.

The documentary will focus on how Brand’s Messiah Complex show was influenced by his “heroes” - Gandhi, Malcolm X, Jesus and Ché Guevara – and how he seeks to “challenge and empower the people to stage a non-violent revolution”.

Director and producer Timoner, the two-time recipient of Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize for documentaries, is also behind the short documentary Russell Brands the Bird, which was released earlier this year. Her latest offering is being produced by Mayfair Film Partnership and Interloper Films.

Brand has been busy in recent weeks, first launching a war of words with Fox News anchors Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity over their coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict, and also writing a lengthy tome on why he opposes anti-Semitism.
