Johnny Depp has spoken publicly for the first time about his break-up with partner, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis.

“The last couple of years have been a bit bumpy,” the 50-year-old actor told Rolling Stone magazine, in an interview to promote his new blockbuster, The Lone Ranger. “At times, it was certainly unpleasant but that’s the nature of break-ups, I guess, especially when there are kiddies involved,” he said.

Depp and Paradis, 40, announced their split last June after 14 years together. They have two children: daughter Lily-Rose, 14, and 11-year-old Jack.

Depp said: “Relationships are very difficult, especially in the racket that I’m in, because you’re constantly away or they’re away and so it’s hard. It wasn’t easy on her. It wasn’t easy on me. It wasn’t easy on the kids. So, yeah. The trajectory of that relationship – you play it out until it goes, one thing leads to another.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor also revealed that he was born “basically blind as a bat” in his left eye, a condition that cannot be treated. He is also near-sighted and far-sighted in his right eye, and is only capable of seeing see a few inches in front of his face without wearing his glasses. “Everything is just very, very blurry,” he said. “I’ve never had proper vision.”
