Obituary: Helen Stephens
Helen Stephens, athlete, died St Louis, Missouri 17 January, aged 75. Known as 'The Fulton Flash', after her home town, and 'The Missouri Express'. Won two track gold medals at the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936 in the 100 metres and the women's 4x100m relay. Her winning time of 11.5sec in the 100m stood as a world record until 1960. Held US indoor records for 50m, the shot put and the standing broad jump, and outdoor records for 100 yards and 220 yards. Played women's professional basketball and competed in the Senior Olympics.
