Obituary: Lord Bernstein

MAY I make a small correction to Sir Denis Forman's appreciative tribute to his former chief Lord Bernstein which followed Anthony Howard's full and perceptive obituary (6 February)? writes Leonard Miall.

Granada television under Sidney Bernstein's inspired leadership did indeed pioneer many praiseworthy developments in the coverage of political events but it was not the first to take television cameras to a party conference. A current affairs team from BBC Television Talks Department covered the Conservative Party conference - Sir Winston Churchill's last - which began at Blackpool on 7 October 1954. Granada television did not start transmitting until 3 May 1956.
