Forgetting the words to "God Save the Queen" is one thing but apparently the England football team don’t even know who Morrissey is.

Leighton Baines was the notable exception, recognising the Smiths singer in a Miami hotel.

The Everton player could not resist going up to one of his idols at the Mandarin Oriental last week.

"I knew he had played in Miami that week so I had a chat with him and he wished us good luck," the defender said.

"I was a bit nervous about speaking to him because I didn't know how it would be received.

"I don't know if he knew who I was. I don't know if anyone else other than (coach) Gary Neville knew who he was."

Morrissey and England parted ways when the squad flew to Rio de Janeiro to begin the final leg of their World Cup preparations.

Hopefully the good luck message will be work its magic when the team face Italy in their first group match on Saturday.

Morrissey recently released a spoken word video starring Pamela Anderson called “Earth Is The Loneliest Planet”.

More than a quarter of a million fans flocked to follow an account claiming to belong to the singer last month but @itsmorrissey was a fake.
