The Weeknd arrested over the weekend for allegedly punching a police officer in the head

The Weeknd was taken into police custody after he allegedly assaulted a police officer in Las Vegas.

The Grammy-winning R&B artist, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, was arrested on Saturday on one count of misdemeanour battery following an incident at the at the Cromwell Hotel.


Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department public information officer Laura Meltzer told Billboard that it remained unclear whether the original altercation had been of a physical or verbal nature.

However, she claims Tesfaye hit an officer in the side of his head when he arrived on the scene to investigate it.

A spokesperson for the Weeknd is yet to respond to request for comment.

He has subsequently been released on bail.


The Weeknd shot to international fame after the release of his 2013 album Kiss Land.

His new single, “Earned It”, will appear on the soundtrack for the forthcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film.
