Tom Cruise gave locals in south-west London a shock this afternoon when his private helicopter landed on a Morden playing field.

Cruise made a surprise entrance after landing on the Old Rutlishian Sports' Ground on Thursday morning. The actor was in the capital to shoot scenes for his forthcoming film, Jack Reacher.

Donna Whetstone, the club’s steward, told the Independent Cruise greeted staff before leaving in a car.

“A team asked to use our field because it was close to where they were filming. The location guys were there for a while before Tom Cruise arrived.

“They just said an American actor was coming so we Googled to find out who was filming near there."

Ms Whetsone said Cruise was “lovely” to talk to.

“It was really nice actually, his car was parked right where the helicopter landed so we imagined he would jump straight into it. We were waiting close by to try and get a picture of him but he actually waved, came over and said ‘Do you want some photos before I go?’

"He kept thanking us for letting him land there and said it saved him a lot of time.”
