Adele is the country’s richest musician once again, with an estimated £45million – a £15million increase on last year.

Calvin Harris is second on the annual list, compiled by the Sunday Times, with a fortune of £30million. His success forces Cheryl Cole down to third, with £16million.

Then comes all of One Direction – in this order Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, each estimated at £14million.

The ranking makes them the richest boyband in British music history, not bad considering four years ago they were just an apple in Simon Cowell’s avaricious beady eye.

Perhaps more surprising is Leona Lewis, with £13million, followed by Marcus Mumford and Carey Mulligan who also have a combined worth of £13illion.

While the fortunes of the richest under 30s are impressive, they're small fry compared to the wealth of music figureheads over 30.

Warner Music Group Owner Len Blavatnik is valued at £10billion, miles ahead of Zomba record label founder Clive Calder, who is second with £1.4billion. Musical theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh is third with his £1billion. Paul McCartney and wife Nancy Shevell are joint fourth with their £710million fortune.
