Nigel Farage may argue that they both fought for independence from an evil foreign empire, but for many the comparison may be a little far-fetched.

The Ukip leader gave a rousing final election speech in Broadstairs, Kent, one of the major towns in the South Thanet constituency where Farage is hoping to win a seat at Westminister.

With Farage calling May 7 the "biggest day of my political career," he became rather misty-eyed after the party meeting showed a film of the Ukip leader's 21-year tenure in British politics.

Describing his "long journey" to polling day, Farage compared himself to Mahatma Gandhi, the father figure of India's non-violent independence movement, who famously led the 1930 Salt March and the 1942 Quit India campaign. Gandhi led India to independence from British rule in 1947.

Farage's Ukip is calling on Britain to withdraw from the European Union and initiate an Australian-style point system to lower immigration levels in the UK.

Farage, 51, is currently a member of the European Parliament and has said that if he fails to get elected in South Thanet he will step down as party leader.
