The public is convinced the Royal baby will be a girl called Alice, with thousands placing bets as they await the Duchess of Cambridge’s impending labour.

Bookmaker William Hill said the number of bets placed on female names suggests the public "expects them to be the perfect family". Yet while Alice is the most popular bet, not everyone is convinced that Prince George will even have a younger sister, with some predicting another male heir to the throne.

Ladbrokes has Alice at 5/4, closely followed by Elizabeth at 6/1. Arthur, at 8/1, continues to be the most popular name for a boy. Betfair has Alice at 6/4, Charlotte at 9/2 and Elizabeth at 8/1. The first boy's name on their list of odds is James at 14/1.

To find out what the "other experts" are predicting, The Independent went to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital and spoke with Royal Family super-fans Terence Hutt, John Loughrey, Amy Thompson and Kathy Martin.
