SIXTEEN SEVERED pigs' heads were mounted on railings on six of Liverpool's main approach roads yesterday in what is believed to be a protest by football fans at police handling of crowd trouble last weekend.

Some 21 pigs' heads were recovered in total. Police said they were keeping an open mind as to the motive but had not ruled out links to clashes between riot police and football supporters in Liverpool city centre at the weekend.

An investigation, supervised by the independent Police Complaints Authority, has been already launched into the trouble, which flared in the Slater Street area of the city on Saturday after Liverpool's 3-2 home defeat by Manchester United.

Farmers have denied any involvement in the incident and police are questioning local abattoirs to establish the origin of the heads.
