Martina Hingis became the youngest player to win the Wimbledon women's singles title this century when she defeated Jana Novotna on Centre Court yesterday. Hingis, the Czech-born Swiss who will not be 17 until 30 September, triumphed 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. The world No1 is second in the list of youngest Wimbledon champions to Lottie Dod, who won the title in 1887 aged 15.
England appeared to be heading for defeat in the third cricket Test at Old Trafford. At the close on the third day Australia were 262-6 in their second innings, 335 ahead. In the morning England were dismissed for 162-8. British cyclist Chris Boardman will start today's Tour de France in the leader's yellow jersey after winning the curtain-raising time trial by two seconds.
