Railtrack was still clearing wreckage from the Watford train crash yesterday in an effort to open up at least two lines for commuter traffic today. One of the two train drivers injured in the collision left hospital yesterday, but seven people were still being treated. Ruth Snook, a journalist, died and 75 people were injured in the crash south of Watford junction on Thursday when a commuter train struck an empty train. An investigation is under way.

Another train carrying 55 passengers had a lucky escape on Saturday night when it collided with the front of a tractor on a farm crossing near Welshpool. A British Transport police spokesman said: "Another few seconds and we could have been dealing with a very serious incident." Louise Jury
