At least nine people were killed and 10 others were missing after unusually heavy rains flooded villages in Cameroon's arid north, officials said yesterday.

Downpours last weekend swept away homes in Bamanga and other villages near Garoua in Northern Province. Local authorities had called for emergency supplies of food and medicine.

Rainstorms and flooding have ravaged many countries in sub-Saharan Africa in the past two weeks. Scores of fishermen have been killed at sea off Senegal and Gambia.
