MEXICO MAY be spared the onslaught of Hurricane Hilary after forecasters downgraded it to a tropical storm likely to fade before it reaches the Baja California coast.

It briefly became the sixth hurricane of the season but lost its status after its winds dropped to 60mph. It reached minimum hurricane strength on Sunday, with winds of 75mph, the National Hurricane Centre in Miami said.
