AT LEAST 12 people have died of exposure or hypothermia in Poland since cold weather set in a month ago, including three this week, police in Warsaw said yesterday. Temperatures have fallen to as low as minus 15C (5F) in the country this week.

Last winter, police reported 225 cold-related deaths across Poland. Most of the casualties were men aged 40 to 60 who had been drinking alcohol before they died.
