Doctors were last night accused of using the courts to "open the door" to euthanasia, after the second "right to die" ruling this week. At the High Court, South Buckinghamshire NHS Trust doctors caring for a 23-year-old severely brain-damaged man were given permission not to attempt resuscitation if he has a heart attack.

After consultation with his family, anti-biotics may also be denied if he contracts an infection. Tory MP Ann Winterton, chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group, also referring to a similar ruling in Scotland on Wednesday, said: "We are seeing a determined attempt by doctors to bring more cases towards the courts with a view to opening the door wider to euthanasia"
