The Balkan Question

KEY ISSUES BEHIND THE WAR EXPLAINED
DO THE Serbs have a tradition of rebelling against their rulers?

MODERN SERBIA was born of an insurrection against the country's Ottoman rulers in the early 19th century. But the Serbs soon turned on their rebel leader, Karageorge, and sent his head on a platter to the Sultan as a peace offering.

Serbia's most spectacular coup was in 1903, when a group of army officers overthrew the Obrenovic dynasty by hacking the King and Queen to pieces in their palace in Belgrade.
