The Green Party wants to redraw the constitution and restrict the Queen to a ceremonial role

Just months after saying they'd entertain the possibility of putting the Queen in a council house, the Green Party has reaffirmed its anti-royalist stance.

The Greens want a “People’s Convention” to redraw the UK constitution, including restricting the Queen to a purely ceremonial role, the party’s leader, Natalie Bennett, has said.

She told Sky News:

In the Green Party, we believe that the hereditary principle should have no place in our constitution. We want to have an elected House of Lords as well as proportional representation in both the lower house and the upper house. That is the kind of constitutional reform we are focused on.

Ms Bennett suggested that Britain should follow the example of Sweden, which removed all political powers from its royal family in the 1970s.
