A POLL of Conservative backbenchers carried out by the Independent on Sunday shows that Norman Lamont has strengthened his position as Chancellor of the Exchequer following last week's Budget. More than 70 per cent of those polled said he should remain as Chancellor to present the autumn Budget.
Questioned about who should be Mr Lamont's eventual successor, the poll showed strongest support for John MacGregor, the Secretary of State for Transport. Support for candidates of the right was evenly split between Michael Portillo and Michael Howard.
