A visionary plan to extend Hyde Park in London by routing Park Lane underground is to be announced next month by a consortium seeking lottery funding for the project.

The idea would be to give back the six acres taken from the park in the Sixties when much of Park Lane was turned into an eight-lane dual carriageway. The scheme, costing up to pounds 90m, is being promoted by two engineering firms. Christian Wolmar
