POLICE suspect that animal rights extremists may be responsible for firebomb attacks on the Isle of Wight and in Oxford and Cambridge, which caused millions of pounds of damage.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Hider, who is heading the inquiry into the island attacks two weeks ago, said there were strong similarities with the incidents on the mainland in June and July.

The targets and devices used were similar, and all the attacks were carried out on Tuesday nights.

Mr Hider said it was only by good fortune that they were not dealing with a murder inquiry.
