Army's supply-side move

FUTURE battles will not be lost for the want of a nail . . . or anything else. The Army's new Royal Logistic Corps, 20,000 strong, is formed today, with the Princess Royal appointed as Colonel-in-Chief. Parades in Ireland, Germany and the former Yugoslavia will mark the single most important amalgamation in the Army's current restructuring. Men and women of five arms will be 'rebadged' as members of the Corps which will provide everything to keep front-line troops fit and enable them to fight.

The RLC, commanded by Major-General David Burden, forms 16 per cent of the regular Army and a similar proportion of the Territorial Army. It is formed from the Postal and Courier service of the Royal Engineers, The Royal Corps of Transport, the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, the Royal Pioneer Corps and the Army Catering Corps.
